《The heart of Pharaoh
※What does the heart say?
*The image of a hardened heart is the Bible’s way of expressing obstinacy.
*The Hebrew Bible uses three different words to refer to Pharaoh’s heart:
①hazak חזק (strong), ②kaved כבד (heavy), and ③kasheh קשה (hard).

-①-Exodus 14:8 The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he chased after the sons of Israel as the sons of Israel were going out boldly.

*Usually in Biblical Hebrew these three adjectives convey positive attributes; the “strong sword of the Lord” (Isaiah 27:1), or the “heavy army” of the Arameans (2 Kings 6:14). But these words become negative when they describe the heart.

*In that day the Lord with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea. (KJV)

※More than just a heart
*In the biblical mindset the heart, lev (לב) in Hebrew, is much more than merely the heart. It represents the inner self. It is what causes us to love, cry and empathize.

A form of 3824; the heart;
-1 inner man, mind, will, heart, understanding
~

*Having a soft lev is what makes us human. In contrast, our outer body parts must be harder, in order to protect our fragile inner lev. The task of being a moral human being is making sure the inner and outer realms remain separate.
※Open your heart to read Hebrew bible
*The hard heart of Pharaoh led to his eventual downfall. It is therefore through this story that the Hebrew bible shows us how important it is to be moral - to have a soft heart.
