Josephus described the fate of the Jews taken captive in 70 a.d. when Jerusalem was destroyed.

The soldiers, “out of the rage and hatred they bore the prisoners, nailed those they caught, in different postures, to the crosses, by way of jest, and their number was so great that there was not enough room for the crosses and not enough crosses for the bodies” (cited in Hengel, 25-26).

Josephus indicates that the Roman general Titus hoped that this would hasten surrender of those still in the besieged city.
