※A Forgotten Name for the Evil One
In his Second Letter to the Corinthians, Paul argues that Christians should entirely separate themselves from non-believers for the sake of their own spiritual well-being. These two groups are as incompatible as righteousness and wickedness, light and darkness, Christ and Belial. You may be wondering: who is Belial? This is one of the less familiar titles of the devil found in the Bible, alongside the more famous Satan, Lucifer, and Tempter.

※What does Belial mean?
Although Paul’s letter is the only place “Belial” is found in the New Testament, it is widely used in the Hebrew Scriptures. It isn’t surprising, therefore, that the name Belial is originally Hebrew. It comes from two words: Beli בלי “without” and Ya’al יעל “value”. Originally the term “son of Belial” referred to a wicked person with no redeeming features, such as an idol worshipper who tempts you to deny the One God (Deut. 13:13).
申命記13:13在耶和華你神所賜你居住的各城中,你若聽人說,有些匪類從你們中間的一座城出來勾引本城的居民,說:『我們不如去事奉你們素來所不認識的別神』;
13 Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;

※Strive for Value in your Biblical studies
This name teaches us that Satan is not always the infernal demon with a pitchfork we imagine. He can manifest himself in subtler ways, by simply urging us to live worthlessly. Being a Son of Belial is to be slothful, passive, or wasting time consuming trivialities.
