Three South Koreans Killed in Collision With Bus
By Saing Soenthrith - June 19, 2013
Four people, including two children, died Tuesday afternoon and seven were injured when a bus crashed into a car carrying a South Korean family on National Road 6 in Kompong Thom province, police said.
A South Korean man and two of his children, an 8-year-old daughter and a son, 10, died on the spot, Stong district police chief Yong Som said.
“Three members of the Korean family died immediately and three others from the same family were critically injured,” including the driver’s wife, their one-year-old daughter and another son, also 8 years old and possibly the twin brother of the deceased 8-year-old, Mr. Som said.
The co-driver of the Olympic Express bus, which was traveling from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, was crushed to death in the collision, while the Cambodian driver, a translator and two Taiwanese tourists were injured, he added.
The crash happened at 2:30 p.m. when the bus crossed over into the lane of the oncoming Honda CRV, in which the Korean family was traveling in Chamna Krom commune, Mr. Som said of the accident, adding that it was not known why the bus driver crossed into the oncoming traffic lane.
“They [survivors] were screaming in a foreign language and we didn’t understand what they were saying,” he said.
All seven injured survivors of the accident were initially taken to the district referral hospital, said the facility’s director, Hul Chhoeun.
“Now, we have sent the two South Korean children to Kantha Bopha in Siem Reap province for emergency medical treatment, and we are still treating the five other victims,” Dr. Chhoeun said. Three of the injured, he added, were critically injured with bone fractures.
Olympic Express could not be reached for comment.
