THE TRAVELLER’S PSALM
BIBLE READING: Psalm 121
This lovely Psalm is said to have been one of the songs used by pilgrims on their way up to the city of Jerusalem for Jewish festivals. There are a number of these songs (Psalm 120 to Psalm 134). They were written at different periods of Jewish history, but put together as hymns of praise and job, and then sung by the marching companies.
Psalm 121 reminds us that God, and no-one else, is our final refuge. The hills around Jerusalem do not guarantee its safety. It is God himself who does. But he not only watches over the city. He is a personal God whose eyes are always watching over his children. It is as though he holds their hands as they walk along life’s pathway.
Sometimes a child doesn’t like his father holding his hand. Sometimes children don’t like parents being too watchful or strict. Often adults don’t like the idea of asking God if they can do certain things or not.
Stop to think of who our God really is. Then you can only admit that if anyone could ever take care of you, he can.
He can see what is ahead if us. He can see when situations would prove too much for us. He will not allow any temptation to touch us that would be too great for us. He watches over us when we go out and when we are at home. He will always do this for us, because he is the Eternal God and never changes.
That certainly is reassuring. Why don’t we trust him more? Why do we doubt him? Why not say to him today, ‘Father I trust you; just help me trust you always’
